Founded in Taranto, in May 1989, by the Town and the Province of Taranto, by Alenia Marconi Systems and by Banca di Puglia e Basilicata, and supported by the Navy, the purpose of the Institution is “to foster the culture and a comprehensive knowledge of the sea world”.To achieve this, the Institution is working at the realization of a scientific and technological sea park (Ionian Technopark of the sea), including a centre of multidisciplinary sea research, a dynamic and interactive museum of the sea and an updated and qualitatively good media-library of the sea. The park shall be realized in Taranto, close to the sea, in a 6-hectar wide State area, granted by the Navy.It must be underlined that the Institution has gained the law acknowledgment through government decree of 28th April 1992, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic N.177 of 29th July 1992, and avails itself of one representative per each of the Ministries that have individuated an institutional competence: the Ministry of Transports and Navigation, the Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research, and the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Property. The "computer laboratory" which represents a very important part of the institution, was set up with the help of Alenia Marconi Systems and of IBM Institution in Italy. This laboratory which is mainly aimed at a multi-medial use, as well as map making, will help us pursue our objective in creating a "marine world data-bank" and a "multimedial encyclopaedia on the sea" together with the organization of a computer library.
